You really only go to Yahoo for the comments. Many of their articles are written poorly, so you go to the comments to clear it up.

Then you have the clickbait and other funny shit that nobody actually reads the article; people go right to the comments.

Any service that doesn’t value the contribution of their users does so at their own peril.

Wait. You go to Yahoo AND you read the comments?

That can’t be good for your mental health

Basically if it isn’t Jalopnik, Revzilla or Rideapart their comments are like looking at youtube comments.  Just don’t do it...

rip Yahoo. The comment section was the only reason I clicked the articles. I would read the headline and skip straight to the comments. Most of the comments were racist or pro/anti Trump drivel, but it was more entertaining than reading the poorly written  articles.

Yes, thankfully Yahoo Answers is still up :o)

Yahoo Answers is the best question and answer site. Fuck reddit and quora lol

Quora is too serious. Yahoo Answers has lots of trolls, and Reddit is somewhere in between

+ 1. The articles seem to be written by a middle school journalism class,  but the comments were pretty darn funny. I guess I’m done with yahoo, which is probably good for my brain cells.

Our local NBC affiliate, where I get my local news, did away with comments a couple of years ago and it’s been wonderful. All new sites should do away with comments.

Comments should be removed because regardless of the article, people use the platform to make divisive statements, usually political and very often derogatory. Prolific readers that post in the tens of thousands bait others with incendiary ‘opinions’ designed to stoke discord and dissent. Yahoo, like every other media outlet, has a responsibility to uphold a basic level of human decency. Allowing readers to publicly voice hate speech, call for extra-judicial violence, and rudely insult one another only adds to an already tense environment. There are far too many other outlets for people to make their opinions known; Yahoo no longer need be one of them.

I find Quora to be garbage. Stack Exchange is where it’s at - it’s pretty serious, but it’s designed solely to have questions get asked and properly answered.

It might be something only software devs know of, but god it works.

Seems like a middle ground would be for them to have a forum setup on a completely different site where people could go, if they really feel the need, and comment/discuss/argue about stories.

Still there, but not immediately visible and easily avoided.

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com
07/23/2020 at 09:23

Kinja'd!!!3

I just don’t understand the necessity for people to be able to discuss everything . Time was, if you wanted to have your opinion printed in the newspaper, you had to send a letter and sign your real name, and your real name got printed in the newspaper. What drives the absolute worst of the internet is that people can spew their garbage anonymously.

Kinja'd!!! davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com > ttyymmnn

Kinja'd!!!3

Yeah, I get it, but there are benefits as well (if a member of the public has additional information, or an update, or something reported is incorrect). The problem is, the percentage of comments that are actually helpful/positive are probably 5% or less...

The anonymity and distance of saying whatever you want on the internet definitely aren’t positives (except in the case of whistleblowers).

Would your really say that if your friends and family could hear you, or if there was the potential for you to get punched immediately after?

Stack Exchange sucks because it’s impossible to even get started. Probably created by the same people who want 3-5 years of experience for an entry level job.

I can understand wanting to get the trolls out, but Stackexchange goes too far and actually hampers legit questions and answers. Maybe it’s just a matter of lowering their insanely high thresholds, but even then it’s a maybe.

Let’s be honest, it’s probably for the best. The comments section was broken beyond repair. People were rigging the system so that the most divisive comments had a thumbs up-down ration of about 100-1 in the first few minutes of posting. If you know how divisive the Yahoo Comments section was, 100-1 is just about impossible. Coupled with the toxic  racism, sexism, and political bashing, the worlds better off without it.

Kinja'd!!! Only Biased based on facts > dogisbadob

Kinja'd!!!1

I would estimate that only 10 % of Yahoo comments are truly hateful. The vast majority are sarcastic. I also find posting to be liberating in this very divisive time. Better to know what people are thinking the n have everyone stewing on it. There was a time on Yahoo where the comment structure allowed for better one on one debate and it was easy to go back to that debate. I had a lot more analytical and fact based discussions and debates in that format.  Then they changed it where it was more difficult to return to the one on one and you were always in the midst of everyone vomiting their opinion.  Still - without the comments, Yahoo becomes another general news syndicate and they also lose all those eyeballs in the comment section which must be millions and for long periods of time.  I can’t imagine how that is good for their business.

Of all the early internet companies Yahoo still manages to be alive...

And I have a yahoo email address because I got one in 1994. I remember signing up for it in the computer lab on campus. Good times.
